A cabinet full of passion for Marijn aan de Stegge from Paak Vinyl Bar

This time we visit Marijn aan de Stegge (30) of Paak Vinyl Bar in Nijmegen. He guides us along the bar and then we see at the back the eye-catcher of the place: his vinyl shop filled to the brim with records. Under the name ‘Marini Records’ Marijn’s passion comes to life here. And how! Except for a cabinet with a record player and a chair, the whole space is filled with crates full of vinyl records. It feels as if we are traveling back in time for a moment.

The art of 'digging'

Collecting all these records is quite a time-consuming process. "I go to a record market almost every weekend, sometimes for several days in a row," says Marijn. "Recently, for example, I was in 's-Hertogenbosch at one of the largest record markets in the world. I arrive at seven o'clock on Friday morning and don't leave until six o'clock on Sunday evening. I love spending hours digging, searching for those special records. Sometimes more than ten hours a day. I also seek out record dealers who match my sound and ask them for recommendations. That way, I come home with a new collection every time. In 's-Hertogenbosch, for example, I bought 500 new records."

Marijn loves music because of its infinity. "So much has been created that there's always something new to discover. Take my passion for jazz. It started with listening to well-known jazz musicians like Chet Baker. Then I really dove into it, and a few months later I was listening to Polish jazz. I love the idea of constantly opening new doors."

Finally, we asked Marijn which records he highlighted in the cabinet's display. The record on the left in the photo is Pharoah Sanders' 'Heart is a Melody'. "A truly beautiful record; I'm a huge Sanders fan. He passed away recently, and since then I've started delving deeper into his music. It relives it all over again and makes me realize how special everything he created is." The record on the right in the photo is by Gene Harris. "It's a beautiful jazz record that I recently bought in Groningen. I'd been looking for this record for a while and just stumbled upon it there. A find like that is always special. These are truly records I'm proud of."
