A simple question about a winch on a Defender brought Lundia’s René into contact with Bas van Driel from Bas4Cars. This resulted – besides an expert answer to the question – in a flood of words full of passion. Bas’s passion began with a job in a garage, where he was allowed to sweep the floor. There, his love for cars grew, and at 17 years old he bought his first Range Rover Classic. By now, Bas is an authority on Land Rovers far beyond the country’s borders. “Everything is possible, if there is a will,” he believes. “From my passion, I now make car dreams come true for my customers and myself.”

Effort for the best result

His workshop, where his watchful dog Java calmly greets you, is a breath of fresh air. No high-tech here—except for the occasional laptop—just socket wrenches. No expensive showroom, just a glimpse of the cars in the workshop. Yellow lines on the floor indicate where you can look around without getting in the way of the mechanics. "Would you like some coffee?" Bas greets us warmly. "I have really good coffee. You might have to put in a bit of effort to find the right beans and set up your machine, but that effort is all part of it." The coffee is indeed delicious, as are the stories about his passion for Land Rover and rallying. "Over the years, I've built up a wealth of knowledge about Land Rovers, and the Defender in particular," he says. "That knowledge comes in handy in rallying. I receive orders from all over the world, and sometimes quite absurd requests. For example, Red Bull Motorsport once asked me to prepare a rally press car for the Dakar Rally in two weeks. In the right colors."

From Petrolhead to Mr Green Fuel

It'll come as no surprise that Bas and his team pulled it off. But his passion goes further. Because although it might seem like gasoline runs through his veins, he's fully committed to eco-fuel. "A relationship from rallying started a few years ago to develop a fuel based on algae," he explains. "Completely ecological and CO2-neutral. As far as I'm concerned, a promising alternative to the electric car. Because just think: an electric car is made up of more than half plastic—from petroleum, in other words. This keeps us dependent on fossil fuels. And what about the harmful substances in the battery?" Unfortunately, the Netherlands wasn't on the agenda for the introduction of eco-fuel for the time being. That is, until the initiator heard Bas's argument. Long story short: Bas is responsible for the Dutch introduction and is now hard at work launching an eco-fuel company. That will undoubtedly cause quite a stir in the industry.

Fortunately, Bas can count on a warm and supportive home base. "My partner and I shape the company together. She gives me all the freedom to do what I'm good at. And our children? They're already crazy about Land Rover!"
